WR Dawson Promoted to Active Roster

Posted Oct 24, 2013

Rookie WR Skye Dawson has been promoted from the practice squad for the second time in eight days, and DE Trevor Scott has been released

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • WR Skye Dawson has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster for the second time in eight days
  • Two wide receivers, Mike Williams and Chris Owusu, are questionable to play in Thursday night's game against Carolina
  • DE Trevor Scott was released to make room for Dawson on the active roster
It's been an interesting 48 hours for Skye Dawson, who has been involved in a trio of transactions by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the upshot is that Dawson is right back where he started: on the Buccaneers' active roster and ready to suit up if needed on Thursday night. On Thursday, just hours before the Buccaneers were to take on the Carolina Panthers in a nationally-televised game on NFL Network, the team promoted Dawson from its practice squad to the 53-man roster.  To make room for this maneuver, the Buccaneers released veteran defensive end Trevor Scott.  Also, with a spot now open on the practice squad, Tampa Bay re-signed QB Jordan Rodgers, who had been briefly let go.

Dawson has gotten this same promotion twice in the past eight days.  After spending the first six weeks of the 2013 season on the Bucs' practice squad, he was elevated to the active roster last Wednesday, though he was subsequently named a game-day inactive in Atlanta on Sunday.  After a shoulder injury to running back Doug Martin prompted the team to claim running back Bobby Rainey off waivers from the Cleveland Browns, the team released Dawson on Tuesday to open a spot on the 53-man roster.  After Dawson cleared waivers, he was re-signed to the practice squad, with Rodgers getting his release to make room.

Now Dawson is back on the active roster, which may be an indication that the Buccaneers are still unsure of the availability of wide receivers Mike Williams and Chris Owusu for Thursday's game.  Both wideouts were listed as questionable for the game on Wednesday's injury report, Williams with a hamstring strain and Owusu with a foot injury.  Williams missed the Buccaneers' Week Six game against Philadelphia with that injury but returned to play in Atlanta in Week Seven.

Dawson (5-9, 183) signed with Washington Redskins after the 2013 draft and made it through the preseason before being waived in the final roster cuts.  The Buccaneers picked him up the next day to complete the first iteration of their 2013 practice squad.  Dawson's last game action actually occurred at Raymond James Stadium, as he caught one pass for 11 yards for the Redskins against the Buccaneers in the 2013 preseason finale.

AT TCU, Dawson played in 49 games and made 13 starts, finishing with 91 receptions for 1,125 yards and six touchdowns.  His top season came during his 2011 junior campaign, when he hauled in 45 passes for 500 yards and five scores.  He was also the Horned Frogs' primary kickoff and punt return man as a senior, and he earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors in that role.  Dawson and current St. Louis Rams rookie Tavon Austin were the only two players in the conference to rank among the top five in both kickoff and punt return average.
